Norma Eileen (Clark) Schlager went home to be with the Lord after a long illness on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, with her loving family by her side.
She was born in Lester, WV on June 14, 1936. Her parents were the late B.C. Clark and Dora Clark Masden.
Eileen Attended Trap Hill Elementary and Trap Hill High School. She graduated from Beckley College with an A.A. Degree in 1971 and Bluefield State College with a B.S. Degree in 1974. After graduation, she began her teaching career in the Wyoming County School System. Over the years, Eileen taught at John McGraw Grade, Glen Rogers Grade, and Glen Fork Elementary and Middle School where she retired. In addition to teaching, she served as Faculty Senate President and an officer on the Local School Improvement Council. She was a member of the American Federation of Teachers and served as the Wyoming County Federation of Teachers President. Eileen was named "Teacher of the Year" at Glen Rogers Grade and at Glen Fork Elementary and Middle School. While at Glen Fork Elementary and Middle School, she started the Bonds for Progress Program. Over a twelve year period, at least Five Hundred Fifty Dollar Savings Bonds were presented to students. She loved working with and helping children and supported others who did the same.
Eileen was a staunch supporter of the Democrat Party and was named Democrat of the year. She served on both the Democrat Executive Committee and the Twenty-Third Delegate Committee, was co-founder of the Wyoming County Federation of Democrat Women and served as their first President, served as both secretary and chaplain of the West Virginia Federation of Democrat Women, and was chairman of the state annual auction committee. Eileen was inducted into the West Virginia Federation of Democrat Women's "Hall of Fame" in 2001.
She was active with the American Red Cross and served as a Wyoming County Chairperson. Eileen also served on SAFE Board of Directors which served Wyoming, McDowell, and Mercer counties. She served on the South Central Labor Council of WV, and was a member of the Pineville Lions Club and the Board of Directors for the Wyoming County Toy Fund. She was a Den Mother for a Cub Scout group. Eileen and her late husband Robert organized a Little League Baseball Team, the Cubs, in their home town.
Eileen loved working in her home and with her flowers, traveling, and most of all spending time with her family and friends. She was of Baptist faith and attended several churches over the years serving as youth leader and Sunday school teacher. She will be remembered as a caring, giving lady who worked hard making a difference in the lives of others.
Preceding her in death besides her parents were her husband, Robert (Bobby) Schlager; five sisters, Marie Hill, June Bottomlee, Ina Rae, Elsie Childress, and Betty Burkman; one brother, B.C. Clark, Jr.; and a special niece, Theresa Marie "Susie" Bottomlee.
Left to cherish her memories are her two children; one son, Robert "Malcolm" Schlager and his wife Patricia of Beckley, WV; one daughter, Tammie Renee Cook and her husband Richard "Dickie" Cook of Oceana, WV; two granddaughters, Jessica Faith Harvey and her husband Thomas of Beckley, WV; Maegan Richelle Rymer and her husband Nicholas of Stonewood, WV; three great grandchildren, Tyler and Aislynne Harvey of Beckley, WV, and Teagan Marie Rymer, due to arrive this August, of Stonewood, WV; one sister, Dorothy Bloomingdale and her husband Eugene of Beckley, WV; one brother, Kenneth Clark and his wife Christine of Grafton Ohio; a host of sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law on her husband's side of the family, nieces, nephews, and friends whom she loved dearly.

I would like to give my sincerest condolences to the family of Mrs. Schlager. She was my second grade teacher at Glen Fork Elementary School, many years ago. She was an outstanding teacher and mentor. It saddened me tremendously to hear of her passing. She will be remembered and missed.

Malcolm and Tammie, I am sorry for your loss. Loosing one parent is bad, but both is like your world is missing a very special ingredient to best meal you have ever had. Your mom was very special. My Grandmother was such a special Woman! There was not a day that went by that she didn't make sure she was able to say hello to me and my kids when we got home from the bus stop while she was living beside us. Many times, that hello would lead to long conversations about how her great grandchildren were doing in school or sports, or just how they were doing period. The most memorable of these times were when she would sit down on her front porch, after giving the kids a juice and snack most times, and have a "talk" with Tyler about school. I could watch them for an hour or more just sitting there having a serious talk about how he needed to be well behaved or how to do better at one subject or another. He always listened so attentively to her, even when no one else could get through to him. Anything he had on his mind, she would listen to him and give whatever advice she could when it was needed!
Then there were the times that the kids would be outside playing. One of her favorite things to do as it cooled off in the evenings was to come outside and sit and watch them play. She especially loved the times when we had the pool up. Maybe because my favorite activity growing up was swimming, it may have reminded her of watching me for hours on end swimming beneath the water.
Ne-Ne Eileen was so special in so many ways. I could continue sharing all sorts of memories. But these are my favorites! I loved living next door to my Grandma and getting to spend so much time just talking like we'd never talked before. Those last few years we really got close, and I will never forget all the words of wisdom she passed on to me. She was definitely a woman to aspire to be like. There will never be her equal again.
The world will be a bit quieter, and there will be a bit more merchandise left on the sale racks, but Heaven has gained an amazing soul and I look forward to seeing her again someday!!
