1. Noon Wednesday, August 2, 2012. I just learned that Everett has passed away and I am deeply saddened,--but at the same time joyous that Everett is now in that perfect "rest" with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I'm sure he was welcomed with open arms.
   I first met Everett when I was nearly 13. He was coaching basketball at Wawaka High School and he was my health teacher. From that class I learned that a person should not walk with their toes pointed out, putting undo strain on their back, but rather slightly pigeon-toed. And that was how he walked.

   Many years later, I had the privilege of becoming good friends of Everett and Virgie. I was serving on the Central Noble School Board and he became a mentor to me. He loved to study people and communicate with them in such a way as to help them clarify their beliefs and convictions--to stand behind them--or to redefine them if necessary. Always his words were anchored in his belief in the Lord and he sought to bring others to that point.
   
   He told me, Ask questions, draw others out. Don't overstate your opinion emphatically or in anger or you will not convince anyone that you are correct.
   In his many years working in public education, he encountered many people, both learning from them and teaching them.. His life touched many lives for good.

   He and Virgie particularly liked the sweet corn and tomatoes that I sold each summer and they would stop on their way home from their weekly swims at the YMCA in Kendallville--yes, for the corn and tomatoes, but mostly to talk. And, oh, how he could laugh--over a good story, or the complexities of human nature. He had an optimism that lifted a person's spirit and gave them hope.

   I'm happy that he and Virgie were able to attend a class reunion of the Wawaka classmates of 1969 held at The Gridiron in late March. It took a tremendous effort for them to be there and it was only the determined will of Everett that brought them to us.

   Thank you, Everett, for the portion that you wove into my life's tapestry--a very special, bright spot. And the Lord give you comfort, Virgie, a very special lady.
