Colleen Barnard, 88, of Kingston, Tennessee Died Tuesday, July 31, at home.

She was the beloved wife of Ray Barnard (deceased), and is survived by her children: Mary Nancy Martin, Ramona and Rick Holt, and Margaret and David Hayes; grandchildren: Margaret Ellen Miller; Lara, Joseph, and Julia Holt; Alyson and Matthew Hayes, and great-grandchildren; Amanda, EJ, and Christian Melendez; Maddie Sievert and Ethan Lininger. Mrs. Barnard is preceded in death by her parents, Nancy Ellen Baugh Heany and Collie Baugh.

Mrs. Barnard was born in Kingston in 1923 and has made it her lifelong home. Her ancestral home on Race Street was located on the site of the current Roane County Courthouse. Her family acquired the home in 1850 and until the time of its destruction, nine generations of the family had lived there. Mrs. Barnard has been recognized by the East Tennessee Historical Society as a "First Tennessee Family," having her direct ancestors as settlers prior to Tennessee acquiring statehood in 1796.

One of Mrs. Barnard's hobbies was family genealogy, perhaps inspired by her close relationship with her grandparents, Ada and Charles Matheny, and her great-grandparents, Maggie Lowery and James Madison (Matt) Hartley.

Mrs. Barnard graduated from Roane County High School and received her Bachelor's degree from Maryville College. She also received a National Science Foundation Fellowship in field botany through the Master's degree program at Duke University. Throughout her life, Mrs. Barnard impacted thousands of student lives as a school teacher for 35 years, a piano teacher, and a city recreational director. She was recognized as Teacher of the Year and served terms as President and Vice President for the Roane County Retired Teachers Association.

She was an active member of Kingston United Methodist Church and has served as choir director, organist, and Sunday School teacher over the years.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Colleen Barnard's memory to Kingston United Methodist Church (212 W. Church Street, Kingston, TN 37763) or Alzheimer's Tennessee, Inc. (www.alztennessee.org).

I'm very sorry for your loss. Mrs. Barnard was my 5th grade teacher. She also taught me piano, even when I was not really interested. She was, to me, that one teacher that you never forget. I have often thought about her through the years and I am very thankful that she was part of my childhood.
