Rutland, VT-Alfred Gordon "George" Getty, 60, of Rutland, formerly of Salem, NY, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 14th, 2010 at Rutland Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born in Granville, NY on June 22nd, 1950, he was the son of the late Alfred "Pug" Getty Sr and Margaret "Peg" (McReynolds) Getty. George grew up in Salem and attended Salem Central School. A Vietnam veteran, he served his country in the U.S. Army from 1969-1972. He was honorably discharged and highly decorated.
He spent many years working in the logging industry. After logging, he was employed at Wing Truck and Trailer of Truthville, NY as a welder for 17 years.
He will be most remembered for being a loving father and for his jovial personality. He had a contagious laugh and a unique sense of humor. He will be missed very much by all that knew him.
Survivors include daughters Shelly Getty-Becerril and her husband Valente of South Glens Falls and Shannon Getty of Spartanburg, South Carolina; sons Alfred Getty III of Hudson Falls and Bradley Getty of North Carolina; sisters Rosemary Haines and her husband Horace of Granville, Kathy Larrow-Dostie and her husband Robert of Fort Ann, and Suzanne Stevens and her husband Melvin of Fort Ann; brothers James Getty of Hebron and Paul Getty and his wife Tonya also of Hebron; stepbrothers Jeff Norton of Hebron and Herbie Norton of Michigan. He is also survived by his 6 grandchildren Karyssa and Mikayla Hurd, Cameron Becerril, and Amber, Kaitlyn, and Audri Getty as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at the McClellan-Gariepy Funeral Home, 19 East Broadway, Salem with Rev. Debbie Earthrowl officiating. Interment with military honors will take place at the Evergreen Cemetery in Salem. Following the services, everyone is welcome to join the family at the home of Paul and Tonya Getty at Indian Head Way, Salem for a time of fellowship. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 5-7 pm at the funeral home.
His family would like to thank the hospital staff at Rutland Regional Medical Center for the care that was given to our father during his stay. Also we would like to extend a very special thank you to his best friend Dora Kelley for the constant and most considerate care that she gave to him during his time of need.
