Amy Edwards Harte, 52, of Surry, VA went to be with her Lord and Savior for eternal rest surrounded by loving family and friends on Saturday, June 9, 2012 after a courageous battle against Ovarian Cancer.

Amy was born in Richmond, VA on August 3, 1959 and is survived by her loving husband of 27 years, Paul D. Harte. She is also survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. Wallace Edwards Jr. of Williamsburg, VA and her brother, Samuel W. Edwards, III and his wife, Donna of Surry, VA. Other survivors include her sister-in-law, Penny R. Hite, and her husband, Larry, sister-in-law, Lisa S. Dickens, Amy's nieces, Stephanie A. Edwards, Melissa S. Hite, and nephews, Samuel W. Edwards IV, Thomas E. Hite, William A. Dickens and Jesse P. Dickens.

Amy was a graduate of the University of Virginia, College of Arts and Sciences ('81) and the University of Virginia School of Law ('84) serving as a university guide during her tenure there. Amy always kept UVA and her dear college friends close to her heart as a life member of the University of Virginia Alumni Association.

As a licensed Virginia attorney, Amy was the first female to work for the Harrisonburg, VA law firm of Wharton, Aldhizer, and Weaver and the first female Surry County native to practice law where she opened her law practice in 1986. She later worked for sixteen years in the three generation family owned business as Vice President of S. Wallace Edwards & Sons, Inc. contributing her talent to ensure its success.

An avid student of history, Amy worked as an interpreter at Jamestown, Bacons Castle and Chippokes Plantation in her youth. In 2011, Amy earned a Virginia Department of Education endorsement to teach Government and Science. Most recently, she served as a school group historical interpreter at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, a passion she treasured greatly.

Amy was also a life-long member of the Surry United Methodist Church where she played the piano for Sunday school at the age of eleven. Amy was a Charter Member and former Director of the Surry County, Virginia Chamber of Commerce, Inc., a Board Member of the Surry County Virginia Historical Society Museums, Inc., and a past member and President of the Surry County Business and Professional Women's Club. She loved sail boating, collecting seashells, antiquing, and sharing her love for the University of Virginia and Virginia history.

The family will receive friends at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, VA on Wednesday, June 13 from 5-7 PM. A funeral service for family and friends to celebrate Amy's life will be held at the Surry United Methodist Church on Thursday, June 14 at 11 AM followed by a graveside service at Old St. Luke's Cemetery in Smithfield, Virginia.
