Doris "Penny" Mansfield was born April 8, 1922 to parents John Robert Pennington and Agnes Mercedes (Schmidt) Pennington in Tipton, Pennsylvania. Her baby brother, John "Jack" was born five years later. Penny moved to Washington DC where she worked in an office where there were many people named Doris. She was soon called "Penny" from her last name Pennington and this nickname stayed with her throughout her life. While working, she met Thomas B. Mansfield and fell in love. They were married June 25, 1949. Shortly after they were transferred to North Carolina where they were blessed by their first child, Mercedes. Later they transferred to Minnesota where they had two additions to their family, Mary and Monica. Once again they were transferred, this time to Portland, Oregon in 1954. Two boys were added to their dynamic family, Joe and John. They then built their wonderful home in SW Portland with a spectacular view of the city. In Oregon, Penny began working at Fred Meyer as a customer service representative. In 1974, she began working at the US Bank Corp building as a payroll clerk. She worked there until 1992 when she retired.
Although she was retired, she remained busy with all her hobbies and activities. She was actively involved in her church St. Thomas More, the 49ers group and the Red Hat Society. She also volunteered at Loaves and Fishes, enjoyed sewing and quilting at the senior center and was a team leader for the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk. For about 14 years, she was the team leader for the largest and highest contributing team for the Portland Area Memory Walks. Her grandchildren also kept her busy. She always enjoyed entertaining and never lost the taste for a good beer or a tasty margarita.
Penny Mansfield died May 14, 2012 from complications of Parkinson's. She is survived by: Mercedes, Frank, and Lisa Catherwood, Kelli (Catherwood) Baker, Mary Mansfield and Walter Coate, Monica, Neil, Zach, Alex, and Mallory Schwartz, and Joe and Meagan Mansfield. She was proceeded in death by Thomas B. Mansfield (husband) and John P. Mansfield (son).
