Farrell Sousek, age 82 of Merrill died, Saturday, June 16, 2012 at Pine Crest Nursing Home. Farrell was born August 26, 1929 in Sparta, the son of the late Anthony and Cora (Severson) Sousek. Farrell and Carol VanKeuren were united in marriage August 5, 1950 in Beloit, a union that lasted 61 years. At just the age of 15 Farrell had obtained his pilot license and was able to fly the plane his parents purchased for him. Following High School, he attended college at UW-Madison, and later attended Fort McCoy State Patrol Academy, beginning his career in law enforcement. While in college Farrell served as a Pershing Rifleman. He spent most of his career working in Monroe County and North Dakota. Farrell was in charge of safety patrols. He was the first non diplomat to lay the wreath on the tomb of the unknown soldier in 1979. Farrell enjoyed his time as an Eagle Scout, he liked the Packers, fishing, stock car racing and especially spending time with his family. He also enjoyed Sunny View, his hobby farm in Lacrosse County. Survivors include: wife: Carol Children: Farrell "Dean" Jr., Dan (Tammy), David, Robert, Kristy (Peter) Schwartz, Wendy, Tom and Susanne, 27 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Farrell was preceded in death by his son Steve, February 2010, and his parents. Funeral Services will be 11 am Friday, June 22, 2012 at Waid Funeral Home, Pastor Sue Christian will officiate. Visitation will be 9 am until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Waid Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
