POLIFKO, John A., 79 of Parma, Sergeant Major, USMC retired 3rd Battalion 25th Marines, 1954-1984. Husband of Jean (Tesser) for 52 years, 360 days. Father of Jean Marie (deceased), John Scott (deceased) and Jodi Moriarty. Favorite Father-in-Law to HM1 (FMF) Mark Moriarty, Corpsman of 3rd Battalion 25th Marines. Much loved Papa of Donny and Mickey. Brother of Herb (deceased) (June) Uffman, Robert and Barbara Uffman (both deceased), Nancy and Leo Jung (both deceased), William Uffman (deceased), Donald (Donna) Uffman. Uncle to the whole Uffman famdamily. (Oh, and then there's Stella…) Brother-in-Law to MaryAnn (Ted, deceased) Gaj, and Diana (Chuck) Nicklas. Uncle to many Gaj's, and Dave and Dan Nicklas. Great Uncle to a gazillion great nieces and nephews. Avid runner; 'Senile Strider' logged thousands of miles at Central YMCA before becoming a lifetime member of Omni Fitness Center. He finished 4 marathons; including the United States Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC, as well as area races and half marathons. He was well known as 'that crazy runner' as he trained for all his races outdoors, on the streets of Parma. Regardless of the weather, he would be seen hitting the road, rain, sleet, or snow. He retired from the Ohio Bell Telephone System after 30+ years of laying line, climbing poles, installation, and repair, eventually landing an indoor job in Special Services. Starting his career as a pinsetter, he soon mastered the art of bowling, eventually rising to a level worthy of semi-pro, with 200+ average. However, he chose to bowl on many local leagues and tournaments so he could remain close to his family. As Sgt. Maj of 3/25 Marines, he led the battalion in NATO combined exercises in Germany. He traversed through the Panamanian jungle during Jungle Warfare, and survived negative-twenty-five degrees during Cold Weather Survival at Camp Ripley, MN. During his Marine career he did "more amphibious landings than John Wayne". He loved his family, his country, and his Corps. He bled green 'til the day he died. John was looking forward to Marine Week for months. He was able to visit on the first & second days and was interviewed by Channel 3 News. The footage was pulled and aired nationally on CNN. John was relieved of his worldly command on Friday, June 15, 2012. Godspeed at your new Command; the Big Platoon in the sky. SEMPER FI Funeral Service at the Funeral Home on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at 11 a.m. Interment at Brooklyn Heights Cemetery, Cleveland. Friends may call at the BUSCH FUNERAL HOME, 7501 RIDGE RD., PARMA FROM 4-8 P.M. ON FRIDAY, JUNE 22, 2012. 440-842-7800
