John Richard Murdy, age 71 of Blakesburg, formerly of Agency, passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2012, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

John was born June 24, 1941, to Wendell "Buzz" and Wanda (Jones) Murdy. He attended and graduated from Moravia High School, Class of 1959. After high school, John served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

John worked in maintenance at Hormel and Dexter most of his life.

John enjoyed wood working and following his favorite sports teams; the St. Louis Cardinals, Green Bay Packers, and Iowa Hawkeyes. He also liked going to coffee with friends and classmates.

John is survived by five children, Clark Murdy, Greg Murdy, Tony Murdy of Ottumwa, Lanny (Jeremy) Glosser of Blakesburg, and Mikel Murdy of Ottumwa; six grandchildren, Ethan Murdy, Jeremiah Murdy, and Jeren, Jace, Owen, and Adison Glosser. John is also survived by two brothers, David (Barbara) Murdy of Connecticut and James (Elaine) Murdy of Ohio.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Wendell and Wanda.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, August 18, 2012 at Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Pastor Dennis Doud officiating. Military rites will be provided by the American Legion of Albia, Lovilia, and Melrose. John's body will be cremated following services, and a private family burial will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be open to the public at 11 a.m., Friday, August 17, 2012 at Tharp Funeral Home, with John's family present from 6-8 p.m. Friday evening.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Blakesburg Summer Ball or Blakesburg First Responders.
