Juanita M. Schroeder

I have thought of Mrs. Schroeder many, many times through the years. She was only a teacher of mine for one year, but she left a lasting impression! The late 1970s, she taught my math class.

My memory of her is one teacher who was tough, very steely-eyed, but who also had to be oh so patient with a bunch of kids who probably deserved more corporal punishment than they got! :)

For some reason, two classroom memories stick with me the most...one is where Mrs. Schroeder was trying to teach and someone in the class (I won't name the offending party) was caught with GUM. Now back in the day, you weren't supposed to chew gum in class! Mrs. Schroeder said, "K, is that gum?!"

"Yes"

"Spit it out!"

"It's Aspergum."

Aspergum was some kind of medication that contained aspirin, and so was supposed to be medicine. So the person who was "cheating" with the gum could continue chewing it. I remember looking at her in that moment, and could see her rolling her eyes....like "Oh, brother....what can I do now?!" And she just moved on.

The other memory was when Mrs. Schroeder was really kind of chewing me out...and I deserved it. She was sitting directly across from me, giving me a good talking to about not getting my work done, etc. I was very quiet and silent, listening intently...I did not like getting into trouble.

After her intense instruction, she was sitting looking at me, awaiting a response. I was sitting kind of with my head down, looking ashamed. I told her I would get right on the assignment, and try to do a better job...and then, without thinking about it, I pushed my glasses back up my nose, as they had slipped. The trouble was, I did it with my middle finger...right at Mrs. Schroeder. Now I REALLY did not mean to do that...it was just one of those things.

Well, the look she gave me could have killed! She stared right at me, and when she did that, I realized what I had done. I was smart enough not to try and explain myself away...I just kind of leaned back and looked at her innocently. Truly, it was an unintentional action that looked OH so intentional.

She just got up, gave me one last look, and went to another part of the room.

I am sorry to hear she has passed away. LIke I said before, I've thought about her many times over the past years--Mrs. Schroeder was one of a kind. She is a teacher who will always be remembered.

I remember everything about knowing you, wiping away your tears,listening to your advise on how to deal with son I loved and you had to teach me to be sturn with money,lol..Grocery shopping and making spadinies.....and visions of you and I at kitchen table scratching lotery tickets(dnt worry I will rem to hide them under the place mat so Rick doesn't fuss,lol)..Sorry and I miss you.

Oh, my! Where do you start to express what a wonderful, woman Juanita was?
I can only try to touch the surface... She was a great Wife, Mother, and Friend. I was fortunate to know the Schroeder Family through my Daughter Sarah. She knew Timmy and Chris from school days. Over the past 6 years or so they reunited, and I got the pleasure to meet Rick and Juanita (what a pair:) The Schroder's have been there for Sarah and my Grand Daughter Hailey. I will remember the halloween driving over to Chris's just drop Hailey and Sarah off, but ended up staying for hours laughing with Juanita over a couple glasses of wine and beers.... Juanita talked to my Daughter many, many times about life and taught her how to make the BEST spedini ever!! Any one who thought they made the best said, Juanita's was better hands down!! I'm Italian and never even made spedini! Thanks to Juanita I can now learn how and carry on a tradition with my Daughter and Grand Daughter... I want to thank the whole Schroeder Family for opening their hearts and doors to Sarah and Hailey, some of their best days have been hanging out, and playing with all the kids. Guys I'am so sorry for your loss, Juanita was such a great Lady we went through so much over the years together there was no hill she couldn't climb now she is at the top off the highest hill looking down on all of us her and my dad are talking about baseball mom is talking to someone else because she doesen't want to hear it . Juanita was an amazing cook, and I remember making the family's favorite recipe "spiedini's" with her. It took soo long, but we had a good time making them.
