Mary Elizabeth "Bettie" (née Waters) passed away peacefully at her home on September 26, 2011 surrounded by her family. Age 95 years and a lifelong resident of the Overbrook section of Phila. Graduate Class of 1933, Academy of Notre Dame de Namur, Rittenhouse Square. Beloved wife of the late John K. Garty. Loving mother of Jack Garty, Mary K. Garty, the late Joseph C. (Diane Marcantonio) Garty, the late Ellen "Cookie" Garty and Kate A. (Michael) Givnish. Loving Nana to Michael J., Mary Ellen, Maureen E. and Emily K. Givnish. Caring sister Marie Therese (Hugh) Cummins, the late Charles Waters, the late Fr. Joseph Waters, SSJ, and the late Helen Dixon. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Bettie's Life Celebration Friday starting 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church 63rd Street and Lancaster Avenue, Phila., PA 19151. Her Funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, PO Box 157, 1531 Greenspring Valley Road, Stevenson, MD 21153.
