Mike Whiteside, 64, former well-known local and regional golf professional, died Saturday, August 11, 2012 at his home following a brief illness.
The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols. There will be a private memorial service at a later date. The family suggests memorials to the Hope Clinic of Middle Tennessee, 105 N. Campbell Blvd, Columbia, TN, 38401 or the American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 1864, Columbia, TN, 38401. Born in Columbia, TN, Mike graduated from Columbia Central High School in 1965 and Columbia Military Academy Post Secondary School in 1966. He attended the University of Houston on a golf scholarship, transferring to Middle Tennessee State University where he was named an NCAA All-American in 1968 and received his Bachelor Degree in Marketing.
Mike began his professional career as assistant pro at Belle Meade Country Club in Nashville, TN, before landing one of the South's most prestigous golf positions; becoming the head pro at the internationally renown Shoal Creek Golf Club in Birmingham, AL. Mike also worked for Club Car International, as well as a sales representative in the auto parts industry. He recently retired to enjoy playing golf with his sons and spend time at the river fishing and hunting.
Survivors include his sons, Michael Burton (Wendi) Whiteside, Jr., Jonathon Ryan (Traci) Whiteside, and Jeffrey Benjamin (Ashley) Whiteside, all of Columbia; his father, Burton Whiteside of Columbia; brother, Kirk Whiteside of Helena, AR.; mother of his children, Diane Jones Galloway of Columbia; four grandchildren, McKenzie Whiteside, Taylor Whiteside, Bree Whiteside, and Riley Whiteside; several cousins, including Becky Brown Davis, Pete Brown, Sherry Maddux Shouse, Zeke Maddux, Larry Kirk, and Billy Salrin; and an aunt, Joan Kirk Brown (Gene) Aydelotte.
Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Norma Kirk Whiteside; aunts, Margaret Kirk Maddux and Dot Kirk Salrin; uncles, Ralph Maddux, Raymond Kirk, Mahlon Kirk, and Ward Salrin.
Mr. Whiteside's family extends deepest appreciation to Dr. Charles Ball and the staff at Hope Clinic of Middle Tennessee, Dr. Houston Jameson, and Hospice Compassus for their care and kindness during his illness.
