After attending the prestigious Kamehameha School, she proudly served her country in the United States Air Force and Civil Service for thirty five years. She also served on the Board of Directors for Seymour Johnson Federal Credit Union.
Mikiala is preceded in death by her father, William Lewis Montero. Her surviving family includes her devoted husband of 57 years, Donald Craig Etheridge of Goldsboro; her mother, Nora Peterson Montero of Colorado Springs, CO; her brother, William Donald Montero and wife Barbara of Colorado Springs; her daughter, Dawna Etheridge Thompson and husband Mike of Princeton; her son, Michael Craig Etheridge and wife Teresa of Cary; her son, Jay Donald Etheridge and wife Nancy of Willow Springs; her granddaughters, Stacey Thompson Byrd and husband Christopher of Cary; Lisa Thompson Rochette and husband David of Salt Lake City, UT; and her grandson, Joshua Matthew Thompson of Cocoa Beach, FL.

She and her husband Donald loved to travel, and together they visited all seven continents and all fifty states. She had a passion for painting and loved sharing her artwork with family and friends. She was also an avid bowler and canasta player. She was a member of Saint Mary Catholic Parish.
