Rodney I. Juhnke passed away in Portland, Oregon at age 89. Rod was born in southwest Portland where he grew up in an apartment above his parent's drug store. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1940. After high school he worked in the Kaiser Shipyards in Portland and San Francisco as a steel burner and layer – out helping to build ships for the WWII war effort. He joined the Navy V-12 program and began college at Oregon State University. He was then transferred to the University of Oklahoma where he graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He was stationed on the Island of Guam near the end of World War II.
Following the war, Rod returned to Oregon State University where he earned a second Bachelors degree in Pharmacy. Rod spent most of his career self employed as the owner and operator of several independent drug stores. These included Fulton and Burlingame Pharmacies in southwest Portland. Rod's Pharmacy in Gladstone, Holly Pharmacy in Milwaukie, and Rod's Tigard Pharmacy. He worked the last 10 years of his 56 year Pharmacy career at Costco before retiring in 2006 at age 84.
Rod is survived by his wife LaVerne to whom he was married for over 61 years. Also by his son, Laurence; daughter, Alyson; and daughter - in- law, Lori. He was an active member of Hinson Church for 60 years where he attended with his family. Rod also served as an adult leader of Boy Scout troop 63 for several years in the early 1970s. A memorial service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery on Monday,February 27, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hinson Church Missionary Fund or to The Boy Scouts, of America, Cascade Pacific Council.
