No greater Friend do we have than our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ!! "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead" (1 Peter 1:3). Note the past tense "hath begotten"; it's as good and certain as it will ever be because when He died He said, "It is finished."

Ellen and I learned yesterday of Spurgeon’s passing. Please accept our sincere condolences.

Spurgeon was a wonderful person, as you well know. He was one of the most intelligent and caring persons that I have ever known. Well before the days of computer searches of old documents Spurgeon could cite references to previous reports from memory, spin around to his files and produce the BRP that contained the reference. He was amazing.

His management style was one of nurturing and developing. He constantly tried to help his folks get better, long before the concept of continual improvement was popular. He was well ahead of his time in so many ways.

I shall ever be thankful that he hired me some 40 years ago. But more importantly I am thankful that he was my friend and mentor.

I will always have the feeling that I was blessed to know Spurgeon.

Ellen and I are now both retired, 2003 and 2009, respectively. Laura is a senior accountant with Regal Entertainment Group in Knoxville. She and her 2nd husband Jim have 3 boys (Caden-4, Trey-13, and Matthew 14.) Brian is a psychiatrist and works at the NC Central Regional Hospital in Butner, NC. He and Jenny have a son, Graham, 18 months.

Also, for the last 5-6 years we have been busy caring for Ellen’s parents in Rock Hill. Her dad (89) passed on April 4th and we recently moved her mom (85) to Kingsport to Preston Place II. Kathie and I also lost our mom (92) two years ago after she moved to Preston Place Suites in Feb 2010. So between Knoxville, Durham, and Rock Hill we have been on the go.

But again, please accept our sincere condolence on Spurgeon’s passing. He was a wonderful person.

Sallye, David and I did not know Spurgeon had been ill. We haven't seen you in so many years. Of course, we have fond memories of times we spent together playing bridge and other social times as well with the Hughes. If we are ever in the area, we will try to make contact. I assume you are at the address in Greer. Please accept our sorrow and prayers for you and the children and know you are in our thoughts as well.

Dear Sallye & family,Spurgeon was my first "boss" at Eastman and he got me off to a good start. He had the keenest mind for detail that I have ever encountered. He was fair, encouraging and honest - everything that one could want in a supervisoe. But even more Spurgeon was a very good man, one that I was proud to claim as "friend" throughout our time at Eastman and beyond. With you I grieve his loss.
