William "Bill" Towle, D.M.D., age 89, of Venice, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013. He was born in Richford, Vt. on June 21, 1923, the son of William Clare and Ruth (Haughey) Towle. Dr. Towle was a 1941 graduate of Richford High School (VT). He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps (330th Bomb Unit) in July 1941 and served in the United States, North Africa and Italy during World War II before leaving active duty in July 1945. He later served in the U.S. Army Dental Corps Reserve from 1952-1957. After leaving active service in 1945, Dr. Towle attended the University of Vermont (UVM) and then attended and graduated from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, Mass. in 1952. He served in the Vermont National Guard, 43rd Division in 1948 while at UVM. He was a life member of the Vermont State Dental Society and the American Dental Association, and for many years he was an active member of the Richford Lions Club and American Legion Post No. 12 (Richford) and No. 113(Rotonda.) He married Anne Carpenter of Newport, Vt. on Sept. 1, 1952 and practiced general dentistry in Richford for 35 years. He also volunteered at the North Country Hospital in Newport, VT and Englewood Hospital in Englewood, FL. Dr. Towle is survived by his wife, Anne; three children, daughter Mary Katherine "Kathy" Towle of Atlanta, Ga.; son Michael (Holley) Towle and grandson Andrew Towle of Hendersonville, Tenn.; and daughter Elizabeth Anne "Betsy" (Jay) Brightman and grandchildren Andy Brightman, Samantha Brightman and Emma Brightman of North Wales, Pa.; two sisters Betty Ohno of Saugerties N.Y. and Susan Duncan of Burlington, Vt.; brother-in-law William Carpenter of Burlington, VT and numerous nieces and nephews. Dr. Towle was predeceased by a son, Andrew Towle, in March 1975. Dr. Towle loved Vermont and all of the wonderful things offered there, most specifically skiing (Jay Peak, Vt. and Mont Sutton, Quebec), golf (Richford, Newport and Rotonda Country Clubs), and the family's camp on Lake Memphremagog in Newport, Vt. He also was a devoted Boston Red Sox fan. He was a beloved patriarch, and fixture in Richford and Newport during the many years he practiced dentistry and summered at Lake Memphremagog. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00AM on Monday, February 4, 2013 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Grove City, Florida. Burial will be held in Vermont at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Dr. Towle to Autism Speaks, 216 Haddon Ave, Suite 403, Westmont, NJ 08108 or to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation, P.O.
